In the 1950s Swami Vivekananda, an Indian-trained Westerner, introduced yoga to America. He introduced Hatha yoga to America in the 1890s. In America, the popularity of this form grew, and many more Indian gurus came to the U.S. to introduce new forms of yoga.
Yoga was introduced in India in 1930. But it wasn't widely practiced in the United States before the 1970s, when Hollywood actors Aldous Huxley and Charlie Chaplin discovered it. The rise of posture-based yoga was the catalyst for yoga's rise in America during the middle of the 20th century. In the last century, the Western physical culture and the Indian tradition of Hatha Yoga merged. Swami Kuvalayananda (among other American yogis) formulated the practice in medical science. This gave it a more mainstream foundation.

Despite yoga's historical roots, its first American success was not in America. It wasn't until the 1950s that the majority of Americans had heard of the practice.
