There is a rich history of yoga in America. This ancient practice was once a costly tradition that only the very wealthy could afford. Over the years, it has become an increasingly popular fitness regimen with a strong spiritual component. Yoga is affordable for all budgets and lifestyles. The Sanskrit word yoga means "union" and is derived from Sanskrit. The goal of practicing yoga, is to unite your individual self with the supreme Being.

In America, yoga exposure was limited in the 1960s. This was due in large measure to a 40 year-old immigration law which barred Indians residing in the U.S. West Coast union leaders approved it to stop Indians, and other Asians, from entering the United States. A surge in gurus emerged as a result. This was in the 1970s. As a result, there were thousands of Indians living in the United States.

Many practitioners contributed to yoga's success in the west. Sivananda, Desikachar and other yogis were among the first to introduce the teachings of the guru to the U.S.
