Zazen Definition - Meditation in Zen Buddhism

mental health services dover

Zazen is the practice of sitting still for a long time and focusing on deep breathing. While performing zazen, the practitioner must be able to focus on their breathing and maintain a calm mind. Though the practice of savasana may be a bit more difficult to perform than the traditional savasana, it is vital to the development of the human mind. First, find a comfortable place with your spine straight. Now, lock your eyes.

Your posture should be correct while performing zazen. It is a good idea for both knees to be on the ground. Your shoulders should be the same distance as your knees. Your right big tip should be on the left side of your left toe. The spine should be held erect as in the lotus posture. Your hands should naturally rest on each leg.

Zazen requires the practitioner to breathe silently and mindfully. It is not necessary to control the practitioner's breathing. Just let it happen. It is okay to take deep, shallow breaths, as well as short, light, regular breaths. Your breathing should not be forced unless it is absolutely necessary. Instead, let it happen naturally. You should be able experience many different emotions and feelings at once. If these are troubling you, zazen can help.

The "Hokkaijo In" or seated posture is the most important part of the practice. It is important to be seated in the proper seated position when practicing zazen. This means placing the palm of the right hand in your lap and the left hand loosely on top of your right hand. The tips of the thumbs should be lightly touching the Hara (the center of the human body).

The practice or meditation of the mind is the most important part of Zen. The hara, or the place of repose is located four inches below the navel. It expands two inches to either side. The Hara is the seat of the heart, which is the focus of the practice. To achieve this point, the body needs to be balanced. The practitioner must also be calm and unmoving. For a peaceful, harmonious mind, a calm heart is essential.

In order to practice zazen, the practitioner must find a quiet place that is both warm and dark. It should be the location of a Manjushri Bodhisattva's Buddha statue. The location should have adequate light and temperature. The Buddha is considered the supreme being and can be of benefit to all. The key to zazen is a zen practitioner's mind.
