The History of Mindfulness: North America

mindfulness history

A variety of ancient religions and practices are responsible for the history and practice of mindfulness. These include Hinduism Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. How did it make its way to the West, though? Buddhism is a difficult case because it has no theological doctrines about God. It focuses instead on transformation and rebirth in this life. Buddhism is associated with Western health psychology. These cultures share many similarities, as well as the history and practice of mindfulness.

Buddhism

The roots of mindfulness go back to early Buddhism. Jon Kabat Zinn, a Professor of Medicine, adapted the teachings of Buddha for Western culture and created the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic in Massachusetts in 1978. Kabat-Zinn created his program originally as the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program. However, it was later renamed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. His work, although he did not explicitly mention Buddhism, was widely considered scientific.

Westerners were first drawn to Eastern philosophy in the late nineteenth-century. However, Western meditation didn't become widespread until the mid-20th Century. Famous eastern meditation masters visited the West in order to share their methods with western students. This interest prompted many Western students to travel to Asia in order to learn from the best masters. How did mindfulness become so popular? The practice has advanced a lot since its humble beginnings as a niche one.

Hinduism

While mindfulness and Buddhism both have a reputation for their meditative practices and mindfulness, Hinduism boasts a long and interesting history. The scriptures of Hinduism contain references to meditation and acceptance. This ancient religion is several millennia older than Christianity and Buddhism. These practices are discussed in the Bhagavad Gita which is its founding scripture. Buddhist meditation is in fact based upon Hinduism. Siddhartha Gautama (the founder of Buddhism) was raised in India. His education was heavily influenced from Hinduism.

Large libraries all over the United States contain large volumes of The Bhagavad Gita. Buddhism, in addition to its Hindu roots has adopted Hindu meditation practices. The Upanishads, ancient Hindu scriptures, contain many references to meditation and silence as well as acceptance. These same principles have been promoted by many Hindu teachers. Mindfulness is a practice that allows you to be present in the moment, without worrying about the future or the past.

Tibetan Buddhism

The transmission of Buddhist teachings to Tibet originated with late Indian Buddhism. Interactions between India's different traditions were at their highest point from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries. Invasions, institutional competition, scarcity and scarcity had all contributed to Buddhism's almost complete disappearance from India by its fourteenth-century birth. It was then that Tibet became the centre of Buddhism in central Asia. The religion spread to nearby countries. Tibetan Buddhism's history is rich in mythology, history, and philosophy.

Buddhist teachings usually present meditation in a therapeutic way to deal with dissatisfaction over embodied existence. The practice consists of three phases. It begins with studying Buddhist doctrine, and ends in the integration of these concepts into one's own experience. Meditation is "Giving-and-taking" in which the meditator regulates his or her breathing, and how he or she interacts with all beings. In the first stage, the meditator is in a state of awareness during which he or she experiences a connection between two contrasting realms, the two worlds.

Western health psychology

This article examines both mindfulness and the rise of health psychology in North America. It explores the relationship between health psychology and mindfulness, examining how it has shaped cultural understandings of health, and the direction taken by health service provision in markets and social systems. It also explores the role of social psychology in the history of health and wellness. While they share many commonalities between them, there are still a few differences.

Jon KabatZinn is the most important figure in the history and practice of mindfulness in West. He was introduced to meditation at MIT by a Zen missionary. He studied at Providence Zen Center and the Insight Meditation Center. He also used traditions from other cultures to influence his mindfulness teachings. Kabat-Zinn founded the University of Massachusetts Medical School's stress reduction center and developed his famous course, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
